Gagging on Sexism was created after I thought I might burst into flames if I did not find an outlet to combat the craziness in this world called sexism (and of course, because it’s fun). I am not a feminazi, the infamous mythological creature that lives in the closets of sexists. I am just a slightly sarcastic woman equipped with an opinion, wicked fast typing skills, and now, a blog.
I write about what interests me so, my topics can range from manga and anime to the media, but everything I write about will deal in some manner with feminism/sexism. More often than not, I analyze or review some type of fiction (whether it’s manga/anime, books, or movies/TV), focusing on its elements of sexism or feminism. I don’t expect everyone to agree with my opinions (I’d be crazy if I did); my main goal is to get people to think about things in a slightly different way and hopefully recommend some good fiction with strong female characters, too.
As for spoilers, I try to keep my reviews spoiler-free; it’s my job to get you interested in a story, not tell you the entire plot. It’s hard to do this with analyses but, when I discuss potential spoilers I will try to warn readers ahead of time.
Discussion is very much welcome as are suggestions or comments on the blog itself so, comment away; tell me what you think! You can always contact me at otakugirl15@hotmail.com.
Awesome blog keep up the good work! I love your perspective, thanks for showing that been a feminist is not tantamount to been a nagging bore about it. You make the blog interesting and relatable I have seen so many of these mangas and movies and thanks to your blog I actually started to think about the representation of them. I recommended it to lots of my friends I think they will love it 🙂
Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog and I appreciate you spreading the word about it. 🙂
If you have the time and interest I could use some criticism of my own work: http://feminismandthemalegaze.wordpress.com/
I just discovered your blog today, and I’m glad there’s someone who is ready to tackle the issue of sexism in today’s anime and manga, and that too in a sensible and logical manner. You actually give feminists a good name out there. That, and I find your snark and sarcasm enjoyable.
I particularly enjoyed reading your articles regarding the Gundam franchise. I’m a huge mecha fan myself, and a guy to boot, so reading those was very refreshing. I’ve been pining for a female Gundam protagonist for a while now, in fact.
Anyway, enough of me rambling. Keep writing and keep up the good work; I’ll be checking back regularly!
[…] Gagging on Sexism is a blog I can’t recommend highly enough. I usually learn something when Erin updates. […]

[…] Gagging on Sexism is a blog I ran across thanks to John’s awesome linkage. I only had to read her thoughts on the fanservice in Kill-la-Kill to know she was my kind of feminist. Proud to have you in our ranks, Erin. Very proud. […]

Hey, thanks a bunch for following my blog! It means a lot! 😀
I look forward to reading more of your blog! 🙂 And thank you for reading mine!
I got this idea from the blog website, maybe genius. Have you ever thought of making a list of ‘[Shojo] Manga Clichés that Need to Die’? Like, for example; the male lead having to ALWAYS be stronger and smarter than the female lead (because I guess his masculinity and attractiveness would be compromised if it wasn’t the case. ugh) And I don’t know how common this is in manga but in anime, I’m uncomfortable with the persistence of female leads abusing male leads and having it framed as funny (like Winry hitting Ed with a wrench from Fullmetal Alchemist). I feel like it serves to do two conflicting things; show how ‘strong’ and no-nonsense the female lead is (it’s, ‘empowering’?) while at the same time having the comedic effect of a boy being beat up by a GIRL!-so, it seems like it’s trying to empower girls while insulting them at the same time. I don’t know, maybe I’m too sensitive. Anyway, it would be nice to see what you’re list consists of if you decide to make a cliché list. Thanks.
Erin you there? You’ve been quiet for 4 months now. Hope you are doing well.
Thanks for your concern! I’m here and itching to blog again. I’m just finishing up my last year at college so I don’t have much free time at the moment. I plan to start blogging again over break though. Please wait for me a little longer! 🙂
If and when you decide to make another post I’ll be here to read it.
So glad I found this blog, seriously. Your perspective and reviews are critical, informative, and funny. I typed in “non sexist anime” into google because I really want to watch anime again, but I cannot handle the lazy and gross sexist tropes that so many of them have. Thank you for your work with this and I’ll be following!
Heey Erin! here is the thing! I was trying to make a Pinterest board to sum up all Unstereotypical animated Characters I could come up with, just for me really. I thought this was gonna be quite easy but it turned out it was really hard.. I Study animation are into anime and are pissed off every time I watch or play anything, because i am SO tired of gender stereotyping, and I MEAN T-I-R-E-D! I stumbled over this blog when i was trying to include Disney on my list… Im not a fan because of all the hetronormalization’s and princess damsel in distress parts.. I taught about including Princess Tiana because the fact that she is black.. but I was split and wanted a second opinion. I typed in “Princess Tiana feminist” in Google to find “something” and I got to this blog! I am so happy to find out that Im not alone in my “gaging” and really liked your opinions on princess and the frog. My main concern with the movie was that Disney finally made a black princess and she was a frog 95% of the movie… But hey, please check out the list I made and please get back to me. Don’t be surprised if you find some of the characters you are mentioning in your blog because Im gonna read all your entry’s 😉 I think we have allot to discuss.. I Don’t have a textblog, but here is my twitter adn pintrest yao. https://www.pinterest.com/lucyfair/unstereotypical-characters/
